The Sperm Freezing process

    Sperm collection

    Your sperm freezing process is carried out in our primary clinics in Belfast or Dublin. An embryologist will give you a sample pot and instructions. You will then be shown to a private sample room where you will need to produce a semen sample via masturbation.

    It is important that anyone providing a sample for sperm freezing has a period of abstinence for 2 to 4 days prior to the collection. Ideally, you should have regular ejaculation in the lead-up to this appointment to optimise your sample.

    Sperm freezing

    Once you have produced your sample, you will pass it through to the embryology team, directly across from the sample room. The semen sample is then washed, analysed and processed; it will be frozen that day and stored on site in our cryostorage facilities. These are liquid nitrogen tanks kept at ultra-low temperatures, ensuring your sperm is kept safely until you are ready to use it in the future.
