Fertility blood tests are a simple way to learn more about your hormone levels, reproductive health and general well-being. For many patients, they are an early step in understanding fertility and planning what may come next.
Blood testing is one part of a wider fertility assessment at our clinic. While results can offer useful information about your fertility health, they are most meaningful when reviewed alongside your medical history and, where relevant, ultrasound or HyCoSy findings.
The test itself is quick and minimally invasive, and for most patients, it takes only a few minutes. You do not need to be at the stage of starting treatment to have blood testing. Many people choose it as an early step towards understanding their health and thinking more clearly about future fertility planning.

What are fertility blood tests?
Fertility blood tests assess hormones, infection markers, immunity, thyroid function, and other health factors relevant to fertility and treatment planning. For women, one of the best-known blood tests for fertility is AMH, which measures anti-Müllerian hormone and gives information about ovarian reserve, an estimate of the number of eggs remaining in the ovaries.
Other blood tests may include a full blood count (FBC), screening for chlamydia, gonorrhoea and rubella, as well as thyroid function testing. Together, these results can help build a clearer picture of your general health and highlight anything that may need to be considered before treatment begins.
Blood tests may also be relevant for men. A blood test for male fertility may help identify hormone levels, general health markers or, in some cases, other factors that could affect sperm production.

A blood test for fertility can help build a clearer picture of your reproductive health and support decisions about what to do next. It may highlight hormone patterns, show whether further testing could be useful, or identify health markers that may need to be reviewed before treatment is considered.
A hormone blood test for fertility can offer useful information about how your body may be working from a reproductive point of view. For women, this can include ovarian reserve and hormone levels. For men, a blood test for male fertility may help identify hormonal or other health factors that could affect fertility. In some cases, blood tests to assess female fertility can also help us better understand cycle-related hormone function.
Blood test results should always be understood in context, rather than on their own. Our doctors review them as part of your wider fertility picture, alongside your medical history, symptoms, cycle information, semen analysis where relevant, and other tests such as a transvaginal ultrasound, which may also include a HyCoSy.
Taken together, this information allows for a more rounded understanding of your fertility and supports clearer decisions about whether any further testing or treatment is actually needed.

View all Blood Tests questionsA good AMH level depends on your age, medical history and fertility goals. AMH is best understood in context rather than as a single number. Your fertility specialist will explain whether your result falls within your expected range and how it may influence your next steps.
A lower AMH result can feel worrying, but it can also give useful direction. It may suggest that ovarian reserve is lower than expected for your age, which can help you prioritise your fertility options. It does not mean you cannot get pregnant, nor does it measure egg quality. Your team will explain what the result means for you personally and whether any further testing or treatment options should be considered.
An AMH test may give information about ovarian reserve, which can decline as menopause approaches. However, AMH alone cannot confirm exactly when menopause will happen. If you are concerned about perimenopause, menopause or changes in your cycle, our doctors can talk through your symptoms and recommend the most appropriate next steps.
An AMH test is a useful fertility marker, but it should not be interpreted in isolation. Results can sometimes vary between laboratories or be influenced by individual factors. This is why we review AMH alongside your age, medical history, ultrasound findings and wider fertility picture.
