Donor Sperm

For individuals or couples

Donor sperm treatment can offer a clear route to pregnancy when using a partner’s sperm is not possible or not the right option for your family-building journey. In the UK, it may be used by single women, same-sex female couples and heterosexual couples where male-factor infertility is part of the picture.

Our team will support you through every stage of donor sperm treatment with clear information, practical guidance and compassionate care. From choosing a donor to understanding treatment options and legal considerations, we are here to help you move forward with confidence.

What is donor sperm, and how does it work?

Donor sperm is sperm used in fertility treatment to help someone become pregnant. In the UK, donor sperm treatment may be used with IUI, IVF or reciprocal IVF, depending on your circumstances. You will choose and order your donor sperm through Cryos, and our team will coordinate the practical steps until treatment begins.

We currently work with Cryos, an international sperm bank used by patients in the UK and worldwide. If you are planning treatment with donor sperm, our team can guide you through donor selection, ordering and shipping, so the process feels clear from the outset. In the UK, donor sperm used through a licensed clinic is subject to the UK’s 10-family limit, but different rules may apply in other countries, so international use is also important to understand when choosing a donor.

Why choose Thérapie Fertility for donor sperm?

Donor sperm treatment is about more than starting a cycle. The donor sperm treatment process

  • 01

    Treatment planning

The first step is understanding which treatment pathway is most suitable for you. Our doctors will review your fertility history, any previous treatment and your family-building goals before recommending the next step.

This stage is also where we explain how donor sperm treatment works in the UK, including legal requirements and the support available to you.

  • 02

    Donor selection and ordering

If you decide to move forward, you will create a free Cryos account and choose your donor directly. Some people focus on practical criteria, while others focus more on physical traits, background, or characteristics that feel important to them.

Many couples choose a donor who has features similar to the partner, who will not be genetically connected to the child, but this is entirely a personal choice. Once you have chosen and ordered your donor sperm, our clinic coordinates shipping and storage until treatment is due to begin.

  • 03

    Implications counselling

Because donor sperm is regulated, implications counselling is a required part of treatment. This session is designed to help you think about the long-term implications of donor conception and how you may wish to speak to your family and future child about their origins.

It is widely accepted that early, age-appropriate disclosure is in a child’s best interests. Counselling gives you space to reflect on these conversations in a supportive and informed way.

    Treatment with donor sperm

Once the donor sperm is in place and your planning is complete, treatment can begin. Depending on your circumstances, this may be donor insemination, IVF or reciprocal IVF.

The clinical steps will vary depending on the treatment chosen, but our team will explain clearly what to expect, what the timeline may look like and how donor sperm will be used during your cycle.

Donor sperm can be a suitable option for single women, same-sex female couples, couples with a trans male partner, and heterosexual couples where male-factor infertility is part of the picture. The right treatment pathway will depend on your fertility history, your goals and the type of treatment recommended for you.

Your donor sperm questions answered

Quick answers to the questions we hear most often about donor sperm at Thérapie Fertility.

  • Yes. In the UK, donor sperm used through a licensed clinic can be used to create children in up to 10 families. This does not include the donor’s own family. It is important to understand, however, that this is a UK limit rather than a worldwide one. A donor may also be used outside the UK, where different limits may apply or where there may be no limit at all. This means there could be other donor families internationally as well as within the UK. You can read more about sperm donation and the law on the HFEA website.

  • Fertility clinics are only licensed to work with specific sperm banks. In Dublin, Thérapie Fertility works with European Sperm Bank and in Belfast, Thérapie Fertility works with Cryos.

  • In Ireland and the UK there are donor family limits. This is the number of families that can be created with one donor. In Ireland the limit is 4 families and in the UK that limit is 10 families.

  • Yes absolutely. Many of our patients at Thérapie Fertility are single women choosing to become pregnant with the assistance of a sperm donor. In this case you may choose to do an IUI or IVF cycle, as advised by your doctor.

  • Not at present. We encourage patients to use their embryos by doing frozen embryo transfers before starting a new cycle with us.
