AMH

Hormone testing

An AMH test is a simple blood test that measures anti-Müllerian hormone, a hormone linked to ovarian reserve. In practical terms, it can help show how many eggs may still remain in the ovaries, although it does not measure egg quality or predict pregnancy on its own.

In the UK, many patients choose an AMH blood test as an early step in understanding their fertility. It can be helpful whether you are trying to conceive now, thinking about treatment, or simply want clearer information about your reproductive health and future options.

At Thérapie Fertility, we always look at AMH as part of a wider fertility picture. That means reviewing your result alongside your age, medical history, menstrual cycle and, where relevant, ultrasound findings or HyCoSy results.

What is AMH?

AMH stands for anti-Müllerian hormone. It is produced by small follicles in the ovaries and is commonly used in fertility care as an indicator of ovarian reserve.

An AMH fertility test does not tell us the exact number of eggs you have, nor does it provide any definitive information about egg quality. What it can do is give useful information about how your ovaries may respond if you go on to have fertility treatment.

The AMH blood test is one of the best-known female fertility blood tests in the UK. Even so, it is only one part of the picture. Like all fertility testing, it is most helpful when interpreted in context rather than as a standalone result.

What can an AMH blood test show?

An AMH blood test fertility result can help show how your ovaries may respond to fertility treatment. This can be useful if you are exploring treatment now, considering egg freezing, or trying to understand your fertility options more clearly. AMH can be a very useful marker, but it should not be interpreted on its own. The result is most meaningful when considered alongside your age, medical history, symptoms, cycle pattern and any other relevant fertility tests.

Your AMH blood test fertility result may help us understand:

  • Your ovarian reserve
  • How your ovaries may respond to stimulation medication
  • Whether further testing may be useful
  • Whether fertility preservation could be worth considering
  • How could treatment be planned if you decide to move forward
  • What your next steps may look like based on your wider fertility picture

Why do we test AMH?

We use the AMH test because it can give useful information about ovarian reserve and support fertility planning. As women get older, egg numbers naturally decline. An AMH test can help show whether your ovarian reserve appears higher, lower, or within the expected range for your age.

If AMH is higher, it may suggest that the ovaries could produce more eggs during treatment. If AMH is lower, it may suggest that fewer eggs are likely to be collected if you proceed with fertility treatment. This can help our doctors plan treatment more carefully, including medication doses where appropriate.

A lower AMH result does not mean you cannot become pregnant, nor does it indicate poor egg quality. It is simply one piece of information that can help guide decisions about what to do next.

We believe clear, accessible fertility information matters. For many patients, an AMH test in the UK can be a helpful way to better understand reproductive health and think more confidently about future choices.

Fertility care with you in mind

Your AMH questions answered

Quick answers to the questions we hear most often about AMH at Thérapie Fertility.

  • A good AMH level depends on your age, medical history and fertility goals. AMH is best understood in context rather than as a single number. Your fertility specialist will explain whether your result falls within your expected range and how it may influence your next steps.

  • A lower AMH result can feel worrying, but it can also give useful direction. It may suggest that ovarian reserve is lower than expected for your age, which can help you prioritise your fertility options. It does not mean you cannot get pregnant, nor does it measure egg quality. Your team will explain what the result means for you personally and whether any further testing or treatment options should be considered.

  • An AMH test may give information about ovarian reserve, which can decline as menopause approaches. However, AMH alone cannot confirm exactly when menopause will happen. If you are concerned about perimenopause, menopause or changes in your cycle, our doctors can talk through your symptoms and recommend the most appropriate next steps.

  • An AMH test is a useful fertility marker, but it should not be interpreted in isolation. Results can sometimes vary between laboratories or be influenced by individual factors. This is why we review AMH alongside your age, medical history, ultrasound findings and wider fertility picture.

  • AMH test results are usually available within a short timeframe, though exact timing can vary by laboratory. Our team will let you know when to expect your results and will explain them clearly once they are available.
