What is a Frozen Embryo Transfer and how does it work?

There are two types of embryo transfer: fresh and frozen. A frozen embryo transfer, also called an FET, occurs when an embryo created in an earlier IVF or ICSI cycle is thawed and transferred into the uterus.

In many cases, embryos are frozen because it offers a better opportunity to prepare the body carefully for transfer or because your treating doctor has decided it would be safer for you to have a frozen embryo transfer following on from a stimulation cycle.

Frozen transfers can be as successful as fresh transfers and, in many situations, may offer more suitable conditions for implantation. This is because it can be easier to prepare the uterine lining and hormone levels in a separate cycle. If our doctors feel a fresh transfer may not offer the best conditions, they may recommend a freeze-all approach and plan a frozen transfer instead.

The Frozen Embryo Transfer process

    Uterine preparation

    The first stage of FET is preparing the body to receive the embryo. This usually involves frozen embryo transfer medication, such as oral or injectable hormones, to help build and support the uterine lining.

    Throughout this stage, you will attend monitoring appointments so our team can check how the lining is developing. Once the lining reaches the desired thickness, the timing of the transfer is carefully planned. Progesterone is then used to help prepare the uterus for the embryo.

    Monitoring and coordination

    Careful timing is one of the most important parts of a frozen embryo transfer procedure. Monitoring appointments help your doctor decide when conditions are most suitable for transfer, based on your uterine lining and hormone response.

    If you are wondering which day of the cycle is best for frozen embryo transfer, the answer depends on your medication plan and how your body is responding in that cycle.

    Embryo thaw and transfer

    On the day of embryo transfer, the embryo is thawed and prepared in the laboratory. The embryo is then placed into the uterus using a fine catheter in a simple procedure that does not require anaesthesia.

    The transfer itself is usually quick. Positioning is confirmed using abdominal ultrasound, so you will usually need a full bladder for the procedure. After transfer, our team will explain what happens next, including medication, blood test timing and what to expect in the days that follow. You will attend the clinic about 10 days later for a blood test to check if you are pregnant.

Who is a Frozen Embryo Transfer suitable for?

It may also be recommended if your earlier cycle was planned as a freeze-all cycle, or if a fresh transfer was not considered the best option at the time.
